A Manger Seen, Week 3, Day 18

PSALM 25:1-3 | To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
A third factor that can drive us to abandon holy plans and purposes is external. Frustration and indignation are internal drivers. But often there is an external one. Joseph found public shame and pressure as a victim of what others would see as Mary’s wanton disloyalty. People would gossip and whisper and his reputation would be tarnished. Were he to marry Mary, the celebration would be colored by public disapproval and the ongoing union might never escape censure. The coming child would be illegitimate with uncertain patrimony.
In addition to saving Mary from public disgrace, putting her away quietly would save himself.
Has the prospect of what others will think or say influenced your life decisions?
Should public pressure affect our approach to life decisions?
Notice how honest the Psalmist is about the shame factor.
