A New Heart for the Valley Week 1, Day 5

A NEW HEART FOR THE VALLEY
Jesus did everything wrong from a first century perspective. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong company, wrong request. Samaria was Gentile territory and out of bounds for a Jewish prophet. No one drew water in the heat of the noon time. Men did not have regular conversations with unknown females. Cleanliness laws forbade God’s people from sharing a dish or a spoon or a cup with a non-Jew. But in this odd meeting, we have the key to new hearts—our Lord can give us “living water,” which becomes in us a “gushing stream,” which wells up to eternal life. What an offer! What a promise! The Holy Spirit can slake our deepest thirst, assuages our truest longings, satisfy our most powerful desires.
Imagine yourself meeting Jesus at a well or a water cooler. Hear him ask you for a drink. Listen to his inviting claim and hear it as a personal promise. Ask him for living water.
FAMILY TIME
Talk about where your water comes from and how much we need to drink daily.
Why are water and thirst good images for spiritual longing and God’s Spirit?
