A New Heart for the Valley Week 5, Day 2

A SINGLE HEART
American politics can feel like an exercise in disunity. Jeremiah’s words are a reminder that unity must go deeper than an artificial element; it must involve deep relationships, shared values, and common purpose. Racial categories cannot unify—they only run skin deep, and though they involve a common narrative of suffering in the case of some groups, suffering cannot finally unify, as the experience of the Israelites when they were freed from slavery demonstrates. Very soon disunity appeared! Many groups today that claim to be “communities” are highly artificial because they are not formed on real relations, or thick values, or deep purposes beyond self-interest. Narrow political agendas cannot provide lasting unity either. Notice how quickly divisions follow the unifying experience of the escape from Egypt. VPC must have missional unity, deep agreement on our values and purposes, in order to go forward.
Pray for our country—that we can form relationships around values and purposes that unify.
