Advent Week 1: The Way of the Wilderness, Day 7

Institutions don't guarantee inspiration. Do you agree? Have you ever been moved and challenged by an outsider?

REVOLUTION

LUKE 3:1-9

When God initiates radical change, it often comes from outside established channels. The word of the Lord did not come to the emperor Tiberius or to the governor Pontius Pilate, or to any other political leader, or even to the High Priests and official religious leaders. It came to a locust-eating, hair shirt-wearing peasant, and it came in the wilderness. John challenges the authority of the authorities and power of the powerful. He initiates a revolution that undoes everyone's status. He demands baptism, a first century way for Gentiles to become Jews, from the children of Abraham, insisting that, in the coming era, ethnic identity confers no special advantage. No one is safe or preferred because of association or membership in a group, individuals must undergo internal changes of the heart, which he calls repentance. The real spiritual action was not in temple or court, led by priests or kings. It was in the wilderness and everyone, including the leaders of Israel, got a summons.

Institutions don't guarantee inspiration. Do you agree?

Have you ever been moved and challenged by an outsider?
