1 CORINTHIANS 13:3 | 3 If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Generosity is a fascinating virtue and a crucial Christian practice. How does it connect with love? Now genuine and Godly love is always wise, even when it is extravagant. Generous gifts that are misdirected reveal good intentions but lead to ineffective results.
Paul envisages someone cashing in all their assets, including home and land, 401k, and investments, and then giving it all away in one grand gesture. This relieves the owner of any future wrestling to determine future investments but it runs several risks. One is that the giver may become a dependent! The other is that future opportunities to share, generated from invested capital, cannot be taken. Since resources can generate resources, a total giveaway can be unwise in the medium or long term.
How strategic are you in your generosity?
Are your acts of love wise?
