1 CORINTHIANS 1:18-20 | 18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
1 CORINTHIANS 2:6-7 | 6 Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7 But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.
Paul’s intellectual modesty does not, somehow, detract from his intellectual confidence! God’s truth is actually revealed, with clarity and power, in the life, death, resurrection, and teaching of Jesus. Through Him we have a rock on which to build our homes, an unshakable foundation, a genuine picture of God’s character, His will, and ways. Further, God guides us, through the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, into all truth. There are still mysteries and hard questions, no doubt. But on many matters of faith and life we have trustworthy claims and real understanding.
