Belong & Become, Week 2, Day 9

JOHN 14:16 | 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.

The greatest gift ever given is the one Jesus promises in this verse, the actual presence of the actual God of the universe within our hearts and souls and consciousness. Here translated Advocate, the Greek word parakletos was used in legal settings for someone that was on your side defending and aiding your cause. But this word also can be rendered Comforter, Helper, Encourager, Counselor, Teacher, Guide, Convicter, Interceder, and Empowerer.

This gift has no expiration period, no sell by date, no limited warranty. It Is God’s Gift to us FOREVER. The same spirit that searches our inner thoughts and dreams and knows our every weaknesses is also there to aid us, blessing us emotionally, directing us ethically and mentoring us intellectually.

Each work of the Holy Spirit has a name. Which “name” do you most need today?

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
