REVELATION 7:17 | 17for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

ISAIAH 49:10 | 10they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them down, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them.

What a lovely image: the Lamb became the Shepherd. John 10 has Jesus claim to be the good Shepherd who acts as a lamb—laying down His life for the sheep. Here the one John called the Lamb of God becomes the Shepherd who guides His flock to living water—endless, inexhaustible, ever new life. It is what Jesus promised the Samaritan woman in John 4:14—streams of living water. This is the fulfillment of Psalm 23 in which the shepherd ensures the sheep do not want, they cannot hunger because of green pastures, or thirst next to still waters, they know the peace of souls restored.

God is no “faceless heavenly bureaucrat or violent celestial bully,” NT Wright comments, but a tender parent who wipes away every tear.

Compare Psalm 23 to Revelation 7:17.

Meditate on these precious images.
