EXODUS 3:1| 1Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
Determinism is the intellectual scandal of our day, the great lie of our common life. We are told that our attitudes and behavior are simply a byproduct of our sociology and that we can be categorized and “summed up” in terms of our gender, race, age, and class.
Do not believe this! Human identity is not fixed by economic, social, or racial factors. Moses is proof. His sociology reeks of “oppressor.” Raised in the royal household of the Pharaoh, he was shaped by absolute privilege and unfettered power. He was taught to look down on everyone, especially inferior racial groups like Hebrew slaves. At the very top of a rigid hierarchy, supported by a myth very close to the divine right of kings, he chose to identify with the slaves. He gave up privilege for day labor, fame for the 10 most wanted list, princely position for the role of hired hand on his father-in-law’s farm, the center of urban civilization for the obscurity of the sheep field.
Thank God for the gifts of thought, reason, and will which belie the things that would determine us.
