JOHN 17:8,17 | for the words that you gave to me I have
given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

A second form of unity centers around the truths of the faith. In the traditional language of the church, it is doctrinal agreement, holding common beliefs about God’s nature and purposes, human needs and possibilities, the nature of salvation, the character and mission of the church, the authority of scripture, and the person and work of Jesus.

In John’s gospel, Jesus is the Revealer: “What you gave me, [He says to God] I have given to the disciples.” The word forgive, “didomai,” became a technical term for the substantive claims of the faith. What was “handed over” from the Father to Jesus, and from Jesus to the disciples, is “handed on” through the scriptures to each generation of followers.

What do you identify as central beliefs in your faith?
