JOHN 17:20-21 | 20 I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may
believe that you have sent me.
The unity described in these verses I call mystical. There are negative mysteries, which are simple areas of ignorance and unknowing. But there are also positive mysteries, where we know things which are beyond our reckoning. Jesus’ oneness with God was mystical or mysterious in a positive way. He spoke truth, which could only be divine in origin, because it was so revealing and deep and fruitful. He exercised holy powers of healing, in mortal situations without any reasonable hope of a cure. He responded to hate with love, and violence with forgiveness.
Jesus prays that we would also experience oneness with God, that we might dwell or live within God’s trinitarian presence, sensing His Spirit in one another.
Ask God for a deeper sense of oneness with Him and with
others.
