Body Building Daily Devotional - 73

JOHN 18:37-38 | 37 Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?”
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”

Jesus describes Himself as a king whose royalty is manifested in His witness to the truth. Pilate then registers His cynicism: “what is truth?” For many Romans, truth was whatever the victors in the battle for control deemed it to be. Truth was a convenient myth in a world where the powerful ruled and controlled information and dissent, exactly as it is today among the world’s brutal authoritarian regimes. Perhaps Pilate thought truth unreal. Perhaps just not discoverable by human minds. Either way, it was irrelevant because life was about winning and losing and not about reflecting reality.

Have you ever viewed the truth cynically, as irrelevant?

Have you ever despaired of knowing the truth?
