PSALM 139:13-14 | 13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.

At the Council of Ephesus, in 431 A.D., the term “theotokos,” or    God-bearer, was used for Mary. She had a unique role as the one who carried and nurtured Jesus, the one who was fully divine and fully human. But every other mother who also bears a child, whether boy or girl, carries someone made in the divine image who is meant to become a child of God. Our destiny is to become like Jesus, to be filled with His goodness and glory through faith. Psalm 139:13–14 affirms that God is involved in the genesis of every life. The psalmist did not know about genetics but understood that there was a divine shaping of individual human beings. We know that God has designed an intricate process that combines the continuity and similarity of inheritance with the individuality and uniqueness of particularity. Each child is a one-off who nevertheless resembles their parents, siblings, and ancestors.

Have you ever thought about motherhood in these terms?

Gracious God,

Help us to encourage and bless mothers in their sacred and amazing roles.

Amen.
