Celebrate! May 17, 2025 Devotional

LUKE 7:40-43 | 40 Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Teacher,” he replied, “speak.” 41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt.” And Jesus said to him, “You have judged rightly.”

There are some debts that are impossible to repay. We are all    debtors to Christ, and He has forgiven a debt we owe to God so large nothing we could give back could equal even a portion of it. Jesus uses an impossibly large sum to illustrate this in His parable. What could match the sacrifice of the cross?

But there are many other unpayable debts. The scientist who builds on the pioneering work of previous generations, the artist tutored by a master, the citizen protected by the soldier, firefighter, or      policeman, the child birthed and nurtured by a mother — they all have debts unpayable. Unpayable but not unacknowledged.

Whom do you owe?

Gracious God,

Thank You for paying our spiritual and moral debt on the cross. Thank You for all the other people whose sacrifices have made my life and achievements possible.

Amen.
