Celebrate! May 22, 2025 Devotional

by David Joynt on May 22, 2025

JOSHUA 4:19-21 | 19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 Those twelve stones that they had taken out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal, 21 saying to the Israelites, “When your children ask their parents in time to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’

Milestone moments may commemorate individual turning points or communal ones. Joshua followed through on Moses’ instructions. He anticipated the miracle of the people crossing the Jordan and instructed a representative of each tribe to carry a stone to the    middle of the river, which had stopped to allow the nation to pass through. These stones were then plastered to make a memorial of the moment—a marker between the wandering in the wilderness and the new life in Canaan. Twelve tribes and so twelve stones—the milestone markers were a unifying moment, based on a shared   experience.

Do you have milestones in your family? Workplace? Church?

Gracious God,

You bless us individually and collectively. Unify us through the celebration of shared milestone moments.

Amen.
