Celebrate! May 7, 2025 Devotional

by David Joynt on May 07, 2025

ECCLESIASTIES 8:15 | 15 So I commend enjoyment, for there is nothing better for people under the sun than to eat and drink and enjoy themselves, for this will go with them in their toil through the days of life that God gives them under the sun.

There are many reasons why we should not make happiness a central goal, or teach others to do so. Happiness is easily disrupted. A perfect picnic gives way to a rainstorm. A new product goes on the fritz. A friend has to move away. A perfect meal is interrupted by indigestion. Happiness is fleeting. Glorious careers end. External factors limit or undermine success. Pleasures begin to pale as tastebuds dull or routine encroaches. Age limits passions for activities or people. Happiness sought exclusively leads to a life that is too episodic, too shallow, too dependent on circumstances and ultimately too self-centered. Power, pleasure, and prestige can thrill and entice but not satisfy the soul.

Have you found happiness fleeting at times?

Gracious God,

Help me enjoy every good and perfect gift in ways that honor You and advance the Kingdom.

Amen.
