Christmas at the Movies: Week 2, Day 3
by David Joynt on December 12, 2017
This idea, of a great reversal, in which unexpected and unlikely
heroes emerge and powerful figures fade into insignificance, is
also found in the teaching of Jesus. He insists that the first shall
be last, and the last shall be first. It is the poor who know their
need of God, those who hunger for righteousness, the mourning
and the persecuted, who are blessed. The rich will struggle to
enter the Kingdom, the leaders of Israel are criticized, Herod is
call a fox, and Caesar barely mentioned.
Perhaps Jesus first learned this from his Mother, whose
Magnificat or song predicted what his birth would mean: "He has
scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought
down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly."
When we long for power and acclaim, are we hoping for the
wrong things?
What should we long for?
