LUKE 24:13-16, 27, 32 | 13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?”
In Luke 24 we learn two things about Jesus’ death and Resurrection. First, contrary to first century Jewish expectation, the suffering and death of their Messiah was a fulfillment of scripture, the culmination of the law and the prophets. Second, it was a necessity.
These two revelatory truths are the focus of Jesus’ Resurrection appearances that conclude Luke’s gospel. First, they are shared with two unnamed disciples, walking to Emmaus, who are processing the trauma of Good Friday and the reality of the empty tomb, along with the women’s reports of a risen Jesus. Jesus initiates a conversation with them, and their hearts begin to “burn within” them. This is the fire and excitement of seeing; at last, that Jesus’ life and death are the key to understanding the Torah and the story of Israel. Rather than events that simply shock and confuse, they enlighten and fulfill.
Have you had his "heartburn"?
Gracious God,
Help me to see the beauty of Your plan to reveal and redeem. May the scriptures be for me the great salvation story, climaxing in Jesus.
Amen.
