LUKE 24:44-47 | 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

In a second and final appearance in Luke 24, Jesus again does a bible study—connecting His story to the scriptural narrative as a fulfillment. With Christ as the key, we can see as the disciples did, the marvelous way He fills that narrative with meaning.

  • His single universal sacrifice, as the Lamb of God, is the culmination of centuries of partial offerings.
  • His unique obedience, His just and beautiful life, shows the true meaning of the commandments, understood and obeyed.
  • His suffering on the cross, culminating in His quotation from Psalm 22, answers the haunting questions of Job, the psalms, and the prophets about where God is when we suffer—He is alongside us. He is the suffering servant bearing and healing our iniquities named in Isaiah 53.
  • His battle and victory over sin and death is a new liberation, from a slavery greater than Egyptian bondage.
  • The gift of His Spirit after His Resurrection answers the great desire of the Old Testament prophets, like Ezekiel, Joel, and Jeremiah, for a new and deeper intimacy with God.
  • His mission to those outside Israel, and His commission to reach all nations, fulfills the Abrahamic promise that through Israel God would bless the world.
  • His Resurrection, and His power over disease and death, fulfill the Old Testament dreams of a kingdom free of ills and suffering.
  • His celebration moments with all who repented and followed, His Final Supper, and His Resurrection meals, give hope for the greater celebration which comes with the final Kingdom.

How has the Father filled your life with meaning?

Gracious God,

Thank You for giving us the key in Jesus, to understanding Your heart and Your works. Alleluia!

Amen.
