LUKE 5:28 | 28 And he got up, left everything, and followed him.
There are moral questions faced by doctors, lawyers, teachers, pastors, and retail workers. But some jobs are inherently morally problematic. Many, if not all jobs have moral challenges, questions of honesty and ethics.
Levi’s work is a case in point. Most tax collectors, in most societies, would be dealing with the usual issues faced by any worker. Am I putting in an honest effort? Do I treat customers and colleagues fairly? But Levi was a Jew working for the Roman empire, collecting taxes from his own people that paid for their oppression! He was considered a traitor, a quisling, a profiteer, a collaborator, who enriched himself out of the suffering of his own fellow Jews.
Jesus had a penchant for calling outsiders and moral reprobates to new life. To start that life, Levi had to leave the old one.
Have you faced moral issues at work? How did you resolve them?
Gracious God,
Guide me as I work. Grant me moral clarity. Help me use my resources well and my power in a righteous way. May my work be a witness.
Amen
