Divine Dining February 24, 2026 Devotional

by David Joynt on February 24, 2026

LUKE 5:29 | 29 Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others reclining at the table with them.

In yesterday’s devotion, we observed Levi’s call. He quit his job and “left everything” in order to become a disciple and follow Jesus. I find it fascinating that having let go of his living and security, having set aside his lucrative profession and career, he immediately throws a party.

The guest list is expected, other tax collectors the only attendees, for no one named to be associated with a repugnant, traitorous collaborator. Incidentally, but not accidentally, Jesus’ group of 12 disciples included a zealot, Simon. Zealots favored guerilla like violent opposition to Roman rule, executing tax collectors and burning their counting houses. Yet Simon is so eager to celebrate his new life and to have his old friends meet Jesus, he hosts a banquet. He wants other tax collectors to know the joy and freedom that comes with giving up greed and selfishness, and finding forgiveness and acceptance.

Who are you eager to see come to faith?

Gracious God,

Today we pray for our friends who need Your forgiveness and acceptance, and we thank You for freeing people who follow You from guilt and shame.

Amen.
