LUKE 14:10-11 | 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Jesus does more than criticize ego driven systems for seeking prestige and honor and measuring human value. He introduces a new virtue, a new countercultural way to measure worth, and a new practice to cultivate it. The virtue is humility, the countercultural measure is spiritual and the new practice is to value others more than the self. The rebellious assertive self is the enemy of the God-filled life and leads not only to resentment or jealousy, as we noted yesterday, but to death. To experience divine goodness is simultaneously to know our own weakness and limitation. The glory God can share with us is an infused glory, a reflected reality. We do not generate it or control it. God's glory and goodness fill us with awe and gratitude not pride and self-satisfaction. The self is dislodged from the center of my life as I serve a greater, deeper, wider, divine purpose. Humility can be practiced, even at dinner parties!
Where do you see the falseness and futility of our ego driven world
Gracious God,
You came, in the person of Your Son, in the humble form of a servant. Help me practice humility in everyday forms so I can see others and escape the prison of the self.
Amen.
