Divine Dining March 6, 2026 Devotional

LUKE 7:47 | 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little.

Social convention and expectation can be very confining. Simon is a restricted person. He allows fear of losing social and religious standing to hold him back in his encounter with Jesus. He spends much of this ongoing moment judging Jesus and the unnamed woman. He holds back from embracing God's true messiah. He has the world's greatest teacher, the bringer of the true kingdom, sitting at his table and he can’t embrace Him. He misses out on the joy and excitement of the moment.

The unnamed woman, however, is socially uninhibited, free from convention, not a slave to expectations. She can respond wholeheartedly to Jesus, she can express real emotions, she can fly in the face of etiquette. Her love and gratitude put her directly in touch with her Savior and Lord. They bless Him and move Him and make a moment that is forever alive in Scripture.

Are you bound by convention?

Gracious God,

Free me to be genuine and authentic, to love and embrace. I ask in Jesus name.

Amen.
