Divine Imperatives October 1 Devotional

MATTHEW 6:2 | So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

The word translated “getting their reward” is literally “paid in full.” Certain kinds of benevolence do garner public admiration. Most corporate groups have provision for social or environmental investment to ensure their brand is viewed as responsible and just. Buildings and schools are often named after benefactors, who receive a kind of recognition, even after their deaths. When human recognition is the goal of the gift, however, Jesus tells us that there will be no further reward from our Heavenly Father.

How would your life be different if you most wanted to be known for modesty or humility?

Gracious God,

Let me live today knowing that judgement is coming. Help me focus on what will count.

Amen.
