Divine Imperatives October 6 Devotional

by David Joynt on October 06, 2023

MATTHEW 6:16-18 | 16 And whenever you fast, do not look somber, like the hypocrites, for they mark their faces to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

We pray in order to express our deepest feelings to God, and to receive His guidance and empowerment. We donate resources to build the kingdom, advance the gospel, and demonstrate love by relieving suffering. We fast to learn our limits, discipline our appetites, make room for spiritual activities, and to remind ourselves our God is “not our belly.”

Each of these activities has God designed purposes. If we pray, give, or fast, in order to be seen and admired, we miss out on these purposes. We must beware treating our piety as a vehicle to our popularity.

What are your primary spiritual practices?

Gracious God,

Let me use Your gifts for great and holy purposes. Free me from undue self-concern.

Amen.
