Mary’s grief is evident just in the fact she is present at Jesus’ grave. With a group of soldiers guarding it, and an immovable stone sealing it, how did she imagine she’d get access? The male disciples are in hiding from the authorities, locking the doors against intrusion. Where is her fear?
Great grief, borne of great love, is often irrational and capable of blocking out other emotions entirely. Mary is not willing to let her Lord go. Notice that the empty tomb is a complete and inexplicable surprise.
