The next moment can also be a source of fear. Before the cross, the disciples had a clear future following Jesus, celebrating the arrival of the Kingdom, witnessing miracles, serving those in need, and growing in their understanding. Now all was uncertain. Would they stay together? Would they continue Jesus’ ministry? Would all their hopes and plans have to be abandoned?
Psychological research shows that uncertainty is one of the hardest things for us to deal with—it disrupts our emotions, thought patterns, and even sleep. Jesus’ first words addressed this anxiety and fear—”Peace be with you!”
Do you look at the future with hope or anxiety?
What is most uncertain in your life right now?
