MARK 8:31-33 | 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, 'Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.'
The disciples also had to undergo a revolution in their perspectives. They had to sacrifice a number of their long held beliefs. Among these convictions were their ideas about what Jesus should be doing as Israel’s Messiah.
Like most first century Jews, they envisioned God’s Messiah as a vindicator and defender of Israel’s national interests. He would be a military figure bringing freedom to the nation and judgment for their Roman enemies. No one envisioned a Messiah that would suffer and die as a criminal under messianic-tyrannical authorities. Peter rebukes Jesus for suggesting this!
How has your faith forced you to revise your viewpoints?
Gracious God,
Align our views with Your truths. Help us to see the strength and power in Your love and sacrifice. Don’t let our misconceptions cloud our relationship with You.
Amen.
