MATTHEW 25:35-40 | 35For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. 37Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’
When we enter the spaces and places where there is need and suffering in our world, we will encounter Jesus. When we serve those who are lonely, broken, needy, or suffering we are serving Him because He is present with everyone who struggles. All our small acts of mercy and generosity must be read in this light. Every one of them has eternal weight and significance. God is found not just in moments of sublime beauty, acute cognition, or peaceful meditation. He is found also in life's messes, tragedies, and in those caught up and hurt by them. God’s approval deepens for us on every occasion we serve someone and those moments will shine at the Final Judgement.
Have you met God among those in need or struggling?
Gracious God,
Help me see You and serve You as I encounter those in need. Give my actions of grace and mercy now a final meaning and an eternal weight.
Amen.
