EPHESIANS 2:20 | ²⁰ built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the                 cornerstone;

ACTS 1:26 | ²⁶ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was added to the eleven apostles.

MATTHEW 22:32 | ³² I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is God not of the dead but of the living.

The connection formed within the communion of saints has a present tense connection to past heroes of the faith. The apostles are a current group comprised of the 12 disciples chosen by Jesus,              minus Judas, and with the addition of Matthias. “The prophets” includes all the great prophetic figures of the Torah, beginning with Moses. The communion of saints includes previous generations of believers who are alive with God. This same point is made by Jesus to the Sadducees in Matthew’s gospel.

Gracious God,

Thank You for previous saints whose lives and stories inspire and instruct us. Thank You that they are part of a living community to which I belong.
