Everlasting November 5, 2025 Devotional

EPHESIANS 2:21-22 | 21 in him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

Paul loves architectural metaphors and this one is particularly rich. Jesus is the cornerstone of a new temple in which God dwells, as the Jews believed God dwelt in their Jerusalem Temple. The people making up the communion of saints are like stones in the new structure. Now this implies that the new living Temple has many features of the old one. The Old Temple was the center of God’s activity and presence within the creation; the communion of saints, the center of His activity now. The Old Temple was beautiful and solid, closely cemented together and built to last. The new temple is more beautiful, because every “stone” is a unique person who will be made complete and glorious in Christ. It will last forever, immune from the dissolution of time or ravages of history.

Does this image speak to you? What does it say?

Gracious God,

Cement me into Your community with bonds of love and commitment. Help me add my life to its beautiful structure.

Amen.
