Everlasting November 6, 2025 Devotional

JOHN 17:17-18 | 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

In Jesus’ great prayer for unity in John 17, He describes the oneness that His followers enjoy. The communion of saints is united by both shared truth and shared mission. We are “sent” as Jesus was, to   continue His work in the world, so our unity comes from helping, healing, loving, and serving, and proclaiming. That proclamation, that worldview, and that set of convictions also connects and unites us in a shared sanctity, a common holiness. To be holy is to be whole and set apart. The unity of the communion of saints encompasses what we believe and what we do together.

 

What kind of unity do you share within your Christian community?

 

 

Gracious God,

Create new levels of unity within Your people. Help us see what unites us in our beliefs and our practices.

David Joynt

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
