1 CORINTHIANS 1:18 | 18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Why does the message of the gospel appear foolish to so many people? Two common reasons have to do with the way individuals view themselves and their needs. One sort of person feels that though others may be saved, they themselves are beyond saving. Overwhelmed by guilt or shame or a sense of inadequacy, they cannot imagine being loved and forgiven by God. These folks overestimate other’s holiness and underestimate God’s capacity to repair the broken, heal the wounds, and overcome the failures we all experience.
A second sort of person feels that they do not need to be saved. Confident in their own goodness, they understate their own need and sinfulness, and overstate their own goodness, while ignoring their own mortality.
Have you ever encountered either of these types?
Gracious God,
Grant me a realistic picture of both my need and your amazing grace. I ask in the name of Jesus, the only perfect human being and the source of that grace.
Amen.
