Everlasting October 27, 2025 Devotional

1 CORINTHIANS 1:19 | 19 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

We are naturally curious, seeking knowledge and understanding. Any parent knows the humbling questions that can emanate from a tiny toddler and stump a parent. From the time we are small, we want to know “why” and “how.”

Yet, there are limits to human wisdom and today and tomorrow I will produce evidence for those limits and their character. Today’s four points are:

  1. The stubborn reality of disagreement in every complex area of human endeavor, and the interminable and profound nature of those differences.
  2. The fascinating story of scientific discovery, whose genuine advances have increased the mystery of reality, from the questions raised by the big bang to the counterintuitive truths about space, time, and matter.
  3. The historical pattern of failed intellectual projects that generated failed political and social endeavors. Racially based theories which animated National Socialism are one example, Communism another.
    4. The difference between knowing and doing; we often find ourselves knowing something that is true and good, which we fail to embody and live out.

Which of these limitations strikes you?

Gracious God,

Help me to be humble about my knowledge and eager to learn from You and others.

Amen
