LUKE 17:11-15 | 11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13 they called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" 14 When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.
Lepers call out to Jesus as he moved out of Samaria and Galilee and toward Jerusalem. Samaritans and Jews were rivals and enemies. Suffering erases these lines however, as we notice in this moment that the ten lepers are a mixed race group of Samaritans and Jews. Misery and social isolation has overcome racial, religious and natural enmity. Jesus heals them with a word, sending them to have their healing certified by the priests. All ten are healed as they begin their journey, only one returns. The returnee is a Samaritan! Genuine gratitude is rare and never automatic. It must be cultivated and intentionally practiced.
Are you genuinely grateful?
