PSALM 19:1-4 | 1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; 4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun.
MATTHEW 6:6 | 6 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Prayer is not performance! Jesus encourages us to make a space in our lives and schedules for private moments of prayer, partly to prevent us turning spiritual disciplines into showing off. But Psalm 19, particularly Verses 1-6, takes us out of our prayer closet and into the natural world.
We are encouraged to see the world around us as a gift, full of beauty and order and mystery, worth exploring, understanding, and celebrating. Pursuing the natural sciences can be a spiritual exercise when we see nature’s wonder and connect it to the Creator and giver of life and reason.
In this sense the law, or the scriptures, do not sequester us away from the world, they send us out! Armed with a biblical perspective and a worshipful heart we are ready to discern, discover, and celebrate truth and beauty whenever we find them.
Do you see nature as a gift?
