EXODUS 18:14-18, 21 | 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand around you from morning until evening?” 15 Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to
inquire of God. 16 When they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make known to them the statutes and instructions of God.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You will surely wear yourself out, both you and these people with you. For the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.
21 You should also look for able men among all the people, men who fear God, are trustworthy, and hate dishonest gain; set such men over them as officers over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
One test of a leader’s humility is now they deal with failure and whether they can take correction and advice. If we can’t be corrected then we get beyond the reality checks and stop signs God prepares for us—then the crash becomes inevitable. We begin to see anyone who questions us as disloyal and disparaging.
Moses was able to hear his father-in-law Jethro criticize his management strategy. He took advice and in so doing multiplied his effectiveness by sharing his authority and empowering other leaders. He lessoned his own burden and freed himself for other tasks. One person in one chair can’t solve everyone’s issues!
Can you hear criticism? Take advice?
Notice in Exodus 18 how Jethro is encouraging and honest. (See Verse 9)
