REVELATION 21:1 | 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
ISAIAH 65:17 | 17 For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.
ISAIAH 66:22 | 22For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, says the Lord; so shall your descendants and your name remain.
The prophet Isaiah envisioned a time when God would create a new heaven and a new earth that would abide forever. John begins the second to last chapter of his book with a vision of this new heaven and earth. Now this word new has several senses. Does it mean new as in brand new and utterly separate and distinct from the current cosmos? Or does it mean “renewed” or made new in the sense of being transformed, completed, and perfected?
The kingdom Jesus teaches about and invites people into comes on earth: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in
heaven.” As in the biblical teaching about the resurrection of the body, there is both continuity and radical change in the cosmos coming. This chapter and the final one, 22, explore the similarities and differences, between earth now and then.
What new thing is God doing in you?
