Get Real November 21 Devotional

1 PETER 5:3-7 | 3 Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. 5 In the same way, you who are younger must be subject to the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.
When have you been an example? Perhaps you were an elder brother or sister, expected to be a role model for younger siblings. Maybe you were captain of a team, president of a club, executive over a team. Peter speaks here to his friends in leadership in Asia minor, reminding them that they must set an example of service and humility for their flock or congregation. With authority can come arrogance, the pride building sense of being in control and important. But the Great Shepherd, when He returns, will celebrate leaders who demonstrate the sincere desire to help others grow and make the safety and development of their flock the measure of success. Notice the leader instructions are extended to everyone with the promise that God will exalt the humble.
When have you had a chance to model humility?
Gracious God,
Help me remember the social impact of my actions. Let me lead and act in a way that influences others toward humility.
Amen.
