Get Real October 16 Devotional

by David Joynt on October 16, 2024

1 PETER 1:5 | who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

JOHN 3:16-17 | 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him.

The word for salvation in this verse, is “soteria,” meaning literally deliverance. What are we delivered from? The same six things Jesus delivered people from in His earthly ministry. The angel told Joseph, in Matthew 1:21, his son would “save His people from their sins” and in Mark 2:5, He forgives the sins of the paralytic. We are delivered from the consequences and power of our brokenness. In Matthew 8:25-26, when disciples are really drowned in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus calms the storm, delivering them from danger. In Matthew 9:21, the bleeding woman is cured of her hemorrhage. Our Lord cured many diseases. Through His teaching and example, Jesus delivered people from confusion, those who follow Him do not “walk in darkness” but in His light (John 8:12). He delivers us from death and condemnation too, as John tells us in chapter 3 verses 16 and 17, releasing us from divine judgement by His sacrifice on the cross and through His Resurrection, granting us divine, never-ending life. Thus Jesus raised several people from death in the gospels, demonstrating this power.

How do you define salvation? How do you celebrate it?

Gracious God,

Thank You that our final, complete deliverance is prefigured in Jesus’ life, teaching, death, and Resurrection. Help us rejoice in our rescues now and our ultimate joy.

Amen.
