Get Real October 22 Devotional

1 PETER 1:17 | 17 If you invoke as Father the one who judges impartially according to each person’s work, live in fear during the time of your exile.

Christian life and love is more than a spontaneous response to the beautiful or the gracious in someone else. It is rooted in a reverent awe, a deep and profound awareness of who God is and what He has done for us. Part of that reverent awe is our ability to invoke and address our great Creator.

Roman citizens accused of a grave crime had the right of appeal to the emperor. They could invoke his name and bypass local judges for the ultimate authority. Paul invoked this right in Acts 25. Peter points out in this verse that there is one final, universal judge for the living and the dead and that we can invoke His name, and call Him Father. Our lives are not fleeting experiences of earthly attachment, they are family journeys to our ultimate home.

Do you find it awesome that the ultimate judge is our Father, and our lives are a journey home?

Gracious God,

Thank You that we do not fear judgement, when we know Your grace and love. We can call the final judge, Father.

Amen.
