Get Real October 23 Devotional

by David Joynt on October 23, 2024

1 PETER 1:18-19 | 18 You know that you were ransomed from the futile conduct inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

Peter moves his readers toward a reverent awe by reminding them they are citizens of heaven, temporarily exiled, and they can invoke creation’s judge as their Father. He further encourages holy fear and genuine awe by reminding them of their ransom. They escaped futility, since life outside of God’s salvation is temporary and ends without hope. Catullus, Roman poet, said “the sun rises and sets again, once our brief light is dead there is nothing left except one long night from which we never awake” (Poem 5). It is inspiring to consider we are rescued from the fear and frustration of final darkness and oblivion. How we are rescued is more remarkable still—by blood of the perfect Lamb of God, the divine Son, given as a ransom for the unworthy.

Mediate today on your rescue from futility and its method and means.

Gracious God,

Jesus deliberately gave His life as a ransom for many, a rescue from futility and death. Hallelujah! Grow my sense of awe and gratitude for His life and work.

Amen.
