1 PETER 2:1 | 1 Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice and all guile, insincerity...
Peter then proceeds to give six examples of behaviors and attitudes that must be jettison to achieve that mature and loving Christian life. They are in natural pairs. The first set of two traits to be rid of are guile and insincerity.
Guile is the ability to turn every situation or relationship to your own advantage, through deceit rather than open and honest strategy. Outwardly, good and fair but secretly manipulative, the person with guile pursues selfish goals.
Insincerity is a matching vice which accompanies guile. The Greek word “hupokrites” has a unique history. It began as a word describing someone who answers something, moved to refer to an actor, and then finally to someone who pretends to hide their real feelings and intentions. Mature Christians are sincere and their faces and behavior match their hearts.
When did you last catch yourself manipulating or pretending?
Gracious God,
Align my feelings and my face, my private motives and my public presentation. Help me to think more of helping others and less of assuring my own advantage.
Amen.
