1 PETER 2:2 | ² Like newborn infants, long for the pure milk of God’s word...

Babies delight in eating and as a result, they grow in spectacular fashion. Paul uses the infant metaphor for Christians in several places like 1 Corinthians 3:2, for instance. In 1 Thessalonians 2:7 he even calls himself a nurse maid to babies in Thessalonica. The word for pure, unadulterated milk here is “adulos,” literally without guile. The word of God is truthful and transparent, and it provides the nourishment for our growth. Just as we heard in 1:23 that our new birth came through God’s dynamic word, so it enables our growth, as little ones develop after their births.

We are to yearn for God’s word, like a heart longing for a stream on a scorching day.

Gracious God,

Let me yearn for Your word and grow through the yearning. Let it be a lamp to my feet, a light to my steps, and an anchor for my soul.
