NEHEMIAH 3:1-3; 6:15 | 1 Then the high priest Eliashib set to work with his fellow priests and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set up its doors; they consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred and as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2 And the men of Jericho built next to him. And next to them Zaccur son of Imri built. 3 The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate; they laid its beams and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.
15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.
Practical wisdom breaks larger problems into smaller ones, develops priorities, and enlists help. Nehemiah saw the city walls as a first priority. Without walls, ancient cities were perpetually vulnerable to attack and pillage. Without security, Canaan life was impossible. Further, there was no control over who entered and settled in the city and overtime, many non-Israelites had come to control sections of the area. Nehemiah notified these foreign leaders of his intent and built an Israelite coalition of local district leaders who each took responsibility for a section of the wall. This delegation honored these leaders and provided a mutual accountability. What had seemed an impossible task was done in 52 days!
Can you break large problems into smaller ones?
Are you good at seeking help?
Gracious God,
When we solve problems show us where to begin and who to partner with. Bless our assessments and our plans.
Amen.
