I Am Because You Are August 18, 2025 Devotional

by David Joynt on August 18, 2025

JOHN 4:4-7 | But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

The everyday rituals and duties of life can seem like a series of repetitive and boring routines, immune to anything profound, exciting, or life changing. The routine of fetching water from the village well had no prosect of drama, any more than a trip to the grocery store, the barber, or the DMV. Yet the veil between the natural and supernatural worlds, between human routines and divine encounters is very, very thin.

The Samaritan woman’s unexciting duty turned into a one on one with history’s most intriguing person, the fulfillment of the prophet’s hopes, the Son of God. Her social exclusion—no one fetches water in an arid place at noon time unless they have to be alone to avoid a hassle—gives way to a witness that leads others to a profound life change. Her dignity is restored, her regrets lifted, her questions addressed, enlarged, and answered. It was an everyday ritual that became a life-altering encounter.

Do you expect to meet God in the ordinary moments of your life?

Gracious God,

Meet me today in unexpected places. Raise my hopes for life-altering encounters.

Amen.
