I Am Because You Are August 20, 2025 Devotional

JOHN 4:13-14 | ¹³ Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.”

The spiritual life cannot be sustained by one off encounters, singular moments, no matter how special or dramatic. Unique episodes can be turning points, and they should be remembered and celebrated, as times when our faith deepened or our understanding grew. But the Christian life is a present-tense business, and we can’t live out of prior memories alone.

What Jesus suggests to the Samaritan woman, is that she should ask for something that will be a constant blessing in her life, an everyday inspiration. The spring of water, “gushing up to eternal life” is the Holy Spirit, the internal power and presence of God.

Have you asked God for a deeper experience of the Holy Spirit, a gushing spring of divine life within?

Gracious God,

Fill me, every nook and cranny, every crack and fault line, every part of my heart, soul, and mind, with Your Holy Spirit.
