ACTS 9:1-2 | 1 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
JOHN 14:6a | 6a Jesus said to him, “I am the way...
The earliest name for the followers of Jesus was not ecclesia, or the church, but rather “the people of the Way.” Hence the earliest metaphor for discipleship was that of a journey, a trip from birth to rebirth, from earth to heaven, from life in this world to life in the kingdom, from faith to sight, from brokenness to holiness. The practice of pilgrimage today also connects to this imagery. There is a practical and concrete aspect to this. To travel we need a guide, directions, and supplies. To make the journey enjoyable, we need companions. Jesus is in some ways the destination, or goal of our trip, for we aim to see Him face to face, and be changed into His likeness, but He is also the guide, director, and supplier of what we need along the way.
What has been your favorite trip on your Christian journey?
Gracious God,
Lead on Oh King eternal! Thank You for Your pioneering pathway, and regular guidance, and divine supply of faith and love.
Amen.
