I Am Because You Are September 20, 2025 Devotional

HEBREWS 13:8 | 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

The world, and all the creatures within it, are ever changing. Birth initiates a sequence of growth and development that leads to maturity and then decline. The ecosystems of nature fluctuate and shift as animal populations and micro-environments evolve and creatures compete for survival. Weather alters the natural environment as sun, rain, wind, temperature, and seasons change the landscape. Culture moves with trends and science with discoveries. Generations rise amid technological developments that influence the shape of markets, professions, education, and attitudes. Disruptive events, like wars or revolutions force new patterns of relationships or governance. But Jesus’ character does not alter. His values and His promises remain as the world changes.

 

How has the world changed in your lifetime?

 

Gracious God,

Help me trust in Your steadfast character and purposes, for You are constant in a world of incessant change. May Your constancy solidify my faith and practice.

Amen.

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
