I Am Because You Are September 4, 2025 Devotional

JOHN 6:32-35 | ³² Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” ³⁴ They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” ³⁵ Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

The “I Am” statements of Jesus echo the divine name of God given to Moses in Exodus 3. As such, they are both claims to divine status but they are also descriptions of what our Lord can do for us and in us. God sustains this world. It exists by His will, in all of its vastness and its intricacy. Our deepest hungers are spiritual, personal, and relational. We need truth and understanding for our questions and  as a light for our path. We need mercy and grace for our wounds and our sorrows. We need love and faith in order to be connected to others beyond the walls of ourselves. God is the source of all these things, these necessities of the soul, these non-negotiable needs. Jesus is the means to find them and to have them in our hearts and lives. He is the key to sustainability.
